West Nile Virus International Resources

West Nile virus (WNV) was first identified in a woman from the West Nile District of Uganda in 1937. In addition to the occurrence of the virus in the United States, it also survives in areas of Africa, Europe, West Asia, and the Middle East. In 1974 a large epidemic of WNV occurred in South Africa with 3,000 clinical cases. The last major epidemic occurred in Romania in 1996-1997 with 500 clinical cases and a 10% fatality rate.
